Outpatient Treatment for Mental Health
There are multiple forms of treatment for mental health challenges, including outpatient treatment. An outpatient program is the next step after completing inpatient treatment. An outpatient program offers the flexibility to attend school, work, and important life events. While it offers a lot of freedom, it requires the patient to still follow a strict course of care. Keeping a strict schedule offers the patient stability and support to help conquer the daily battles of mental health.
At Renewal Behavioral Health, it does not matter where a person is on their journey we are committed to helping them achieve better mental health. Our outpatient program is designed to help a person with medical care and guiding them toward a happy and fulfilled life.
Choosing the Right Care for Mental Health
Rehabilitation for those living with mental health issues is a personal and important decision. Many factors should be taken into consideration when deciding on the right form of care for you.
Some of those factors include:
- Are you struggling to keep a job?
- Are you homeless?
- Are you able to care for yourself?
- Are you able to step away from your job?
- Is there someone to care for your kids?
- What are your goals?
Even though rehabilitation centers were initially for substance abuse, it has been proven very effective in managing mental health issues. At Renewal BH we offer two programs for treating mental health, inpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment.
Inpatient treatment is usually the first step in treatment. Inpatient treatment provides a very strict schedule that offers support and education needed to build healthy habits and mental health. Inpatient treatment can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
Outpatient treatment is a continued care program. Once a person successfully completes inpatient treatment they will enter outpatient treatment. In order to be accepted into an outpatient program, a person must show that they are mentally healthy and stable enough to not need 24-hour supervision.
Outpatient treatment is not as strictly supervised so a person must be able to supervise themself. Our outpatient treatment programs are designed to offer support and guidance to continue growing healthy patterns.
Even though most people in our outpatient programs have gone through inpatient treatment, some people go straight into outpatient treatment to help with mental health issues. At RBH we design programs around the life of those who can not leave their family or their jobs. Those still in school benefit greatly from the flexibility of our programs.
Outpatient Treatment Options
Finding the balance in life of taking care of our responsibilities and taking care of ourselves is a constant battle. But for those who are battling mental health issues finding the balance is even harder. They have no choice but to get professional help.
Once they have completed inpatient treatment, they along with their therapy team will decide what the best next step will be. The most common outpatient treatments include partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, and sober living.
Partial Hospitalization Programs
Partial hospitalization programs or PHP, are the next step after completing inpatient treatment. PHP combines the structure and demand of an inpatient program in an outpatient environment. The patient spends around 8 hours a day in treatment and spends their nights and weekends in their regular lives.
It can be scary when you complete inpatient treatment. Getting back to the “real” world and staying mentally healthy comes with new challenges. One benefit of a PHP is that it allows for easing back into “normal” life while still being able to spend time in a “safe” space.
Just like inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization is meant to be your main focus. You will continue with strict treatment while being in charge of your free time. This allows a person to hold down a job, raise their family, and have a social life.
Intensive Outpatient Programs
A further step down is an intensive outpatient program or IOP. Some people enter this stage of treatment right out of inpatient treatment. While others complete a PHP and still need more treatment.
An IOP only requires around 3 hours a day of treatment. This allows for even more freedom for regular life. For most people being allowed to spend more time with family and friends helps boost spirits and confidence.
Sober Living Home
Most people think of drug and alcohol abuse when they hear sober living home. But for some people, they are just not ready for the “real” world. For some going back home is harmful to their mental health. The benefit to sober living homes is someone can get a job and save money while having the stability of a “safe” place to live.
In sober living, a person is held required to follow house rules. A person will be given a curfew and responsibilities within the house. They will be required to use good judgment and behavior and offer support to others in the home.
For some people, sober living homes are not ideal, but for others, it has been crucial to their mental health.

Each rehabilitation center offers unique features and programs, but all centers offer common programs in outpatient treatment. At RBH we offer multiple different programs such as:

- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Social Integration

- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
We also offer these treatments to battle mental health issues:

- Holistic Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive-behavioral therapy or CBT is a form of psychotherapy. CBT is a hands-on approach that believes if you change the thought pattern you change the behavior. In CBT the therapist will help the patient identify the way their thinking affects their lives. The therapist will guide the patient as they learn to restructure their thoughts and in the process have positive behaviors. The patient will set goals for their life and will learn the best ways to achieve those goals.
Dialectal Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy or DBT focuses on four areas of therapeutic skills. These areas focus on emotional pain and having healthy relationships.
- Mindfulness- being present in the moment
- Distress Tolerance- facing negative emotions
- Emotion Regulation- learn ways to handle negative emotions
- Interpersonal Effectiveness- healthy communication skills
Everyone has dealt with trauma at some point in their life. But those with a mental illness process these traumas differently than others. In trauma therapy, the therapist will help the patient dig deep to the root of the issue. Together the patient and therapist will heal the past hurts and rebuild a healthy and happy life.
At RBH we provide a safe and trusting environment that allows the patient to feel empowered to take control of their life.
In order to heal the WHOLE person we firmly believe that holistic therapy is essential. Holistic therapy focuses on the entire body, mind, and spirit. Some forms of holistic therapy involve the following.
- Massage therapy
- Nutritional education
- Physical fitness
Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health and Addiction
Dual Diagnosis is when someone suffers from a mental health disorder and a substance addiction. It is very common for someone who suffers from mental illness to turn to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain or cope with the symptoms.
There are approximately 7.9 million Americans that suffer from a dual-diagnosis. Unfortunately, substance abuse hides mental illnesses so people do not seek treatment before it gets really bad or not at all.
The belief that drugs and/or alcohol cover up the pain leads to severe addiction problems and only makes mental health issues worse. And leaves a person in a worse state than if they just faced the issues and got help.
